TOP FIVE PLACES TO TRAVEL THIS FALL.

Last week marked the official start of summer. While we have seasonal sips and beach destinations to explore, it is time to start thinking about your fall and holiday travel with friends and family.

Duoro Valley , Portugal

Duoro Valley in Portugal is at the top of my list and is one of the most well-known wine regions in the area. Fall is harvest time when the Duoro and Dao Valleys become busy with activities during the annual grape harvest. The fall has many sunny days and most of the crowds have dispersed.

The countryside also shows off an array of lovely colors as the chestnut trees bloom which make it a beautiful time to hike. Temperatures will average around 55 degrees in the Minho and Tras-os-Montes regions.

Six Senses Duoro Valley: Lamego, Portugal

Italy

“Italia” is wonderful year-round but visiting in October is an absolute must. Fall brings out pleasant weather, with mild temperatures and clear skies, casting a special light over cities and countryside. Nights can be chilly but seldom dipping below the 50s F.

In Tuscany, it is fall harvest season for wine lovers and olive eaters. For a quieter retreat, I’d recommend the Amalfi Coast for small, seasonal delights such as the zesty clementines and spaghetti-skinny corniche roads. Keep in mind most of the beach clubs along the Amalfi Coast will close for the season by mid October.

Morocco

Morocco is a stunning Arab nation. Beyond the delicious food and impressive architecture, this country is full of rich culture. My favorite place to stay is the Riad Fes. Transport yourself back in time at this historic resort that was formerly owned by a Moroccan notable. Luxurious, yet traditional with a wonderful roof top terrace.

Looking for some additional exploration, venture into the Sahara Dessert for an unforgettable experience.  Last fall I enjoyed scenic drives through the mountains, camel rides over the dunes, sand surfing and visiting notable movie sites.

Departing from London, take a train ride along the idyllic British countryside aboard the Belmond British Pullman. This historic 1950s carriage features two private ticket experiences that include a private check-in and boarding, free-flowing Veuve Clicquot, a private tour and visits to quaint towns along the way.

Costa Rica

Costa Rica is a tropical country, so you should be prepared for rain anytime, even in the dry season. It’s this rainfall that makes Costa Rica so lush and beautiful.

Avoid the usual beachside resorts and head to Perez Zeledon for the rolling hills and lofty peaks in the thick rainforest landscape. Of course, the tranquil setting is also rife with adventure, from hiking and biking to rafting and zip lining.  Experience the escape of our soul-stirring wellness journeys, soulful cuisine, and adrenaline packed adventures through bespoke itineraries.
